Frequently Asked Questions
“When people put on a play or a dance piece together, they learn to cooperate – and find they must go beyond tradition and authority if they are going to express themselves well…And not the least, the arts can be a great source of joy. Participation in plays, songs and dances fills children with happiness that can carry over into the rest of their education.”
- Martha Nussbaum, Professor of Law and Ethics,
University of Chicago

We work with a number of organizations including the Walden House and the Los Angeles County Housing Authority to find and place at-risk youth in our program. To find out more about how to enroll, please contact Darby Cahill at (323) 939-9220 or by email at Barnstormers@LyricTheatreLA.com.

Where is the camp held?

The La Brea Barnstormers summer theatre camp is held at the Lyric Theatre, located at 520 North La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles.  This 99-seat black box theatre, recently remodeled, is equipped with state of the art lighting and sound systems and just blocks away from Hollywood’s Theatre Row.  For more information, please visit www.LyricTheatreLA.com.

I am interested in doing a workshop at the camp.  How can I get involved?

Each week of the camp, we hold special workshops focusing on special theatre skills that are relevant to the particular play that the campers are producing.  These workshops range from dance to painting to stage combat and much more.  If you’re interested in doing a workshop at the camp please email your resume and description of your workshop to Barnstormers@LyricTheatreLA.com.

What does "barnstormer" mean?

The term "barnstormer" was used in the late 1800's to describe actors and performers who traveled to small towns staging theatrical performances. These shows were entirely produced by the actors, from the design of the costumes to construction of the sets, to the musical entertainment, everything!
