The La Brea Barnstormers began in the summer of 2007 under the co-direction of Darby Cahill and Jessica Champagne. At first modeled after Magic Circle theatre camp at Tufts University (an old stomping ground for Champagne and Barnstormers counselor, Dan O’Brien), the La Brea Barnstormers quickly became a model of its own once the demand for theatre programs in South Central Los Angeles became clear. Many of our campers in the program’s inaugural year were participants in Brighter Futures, a Walden House mentoring program for children with a parent, guardian or influential relative incarcerated at the state or federal prison level. While a number of last year’s campers were on scholarship, we hope to increase our attendance and community impact this year by providing full scholarships for each and every camper with the help of the Lyric Foundation and Barnstormers Sponsors.
